First hand experience in dealing with insurance companies. They can be very creative in trying to wear you down, as Dr. Rose spoke about.
I would recommend this book to everyone regardless of their health.

Relatable to both health providers and patients! This book outlines the frustrations from both ends. It starts off with Dr. Rose's humbling journey- the struggles of medical school, trying to balance work with personal life, dealing with improper behavior of his colleagues. Some of his stories are shocking, and some funny. He emphasizes trust in the doctor-patient relationship which is not so easily attained these days. He also talks about the constraints on practicing medicine i.e. costs, legal system, etc. He then proposes some really great ideas about how medicine can be more efficient. One idea I loved was requiring doctors to provide care for the underserved as part of their recertification. This book is so inspiring, and it's also a very quick and easy read.
Excellent review of a seasoned clinician's view of American medicine
This is a remarkable book, full of insights and frank wisdom. It opens with an autobiographical section which is deeply reflective about family, hidden problems and pain, and how it is dealt with both at the time and later in life. His medical and surgical career, as it develops, is informed by a need to search for ways to improve what he sees as a flawed medical system. Through numerous examples drawn from his practice and other experiences, he discusses the complexity of real treatment and frustrations physicians and patients face, as well as laudable, innovative, integrative approaches. In summary, this is a book you can read fairly quickly, but it will stay with you for a long time. I immediately bought five more copies to give to family and friends. No kidding!
This book is a must read for all patients and healthcare providers. Dr. Rose takes you on his step by step journey on how he became an accomplished specialist in his field of medicine. He states the problems with our healthcare system and provides common sense solutions. I would give this book a six-star rating if it was available!
It wasn't totally what I expected, but the message was what I needed. Excellent book. Thank you Dr. Rose.
Just the kind of insight needed in this day and age of healthcare in the U.S. Having practiced for 27 years as a physical therapist and striving to maintain a patient centered practice in a system that keeps pushing the assembly line mentality, the thing that keeps the joy in my practice is focusing on compassion for each person as an individual. And I especially appreciate the chapter on page 75 "Appreciating Allied Health"; I'm with you all the way Dr. Rose.
