RABBIT HUNT eBook Donald E Zlotnik

This book was written about the same time frame that I was stationed in Thailand. I remember less than ideal race relations at the time. While I don't recall anyone keeping "slaves" in Thailand while there in 1974-1975, I do remember an "arrogance" in many blacks making some really hard to work with. The situation in Germany could have been different. I also remember the drug problem, glad that I didn't fall into that cauldron. About 14 years later, I was stationed in Germany and lived in the village near Kusel, the Autobahn Ausfahrt (exit) one took to go to Baumholder. The description of many places I had been to was accurate and made me long to go there again.

RABBIT HUNT eBook Donald E Zlotnik Reviews

I enjoyed the book. It is a good read without gaps in the storyline. As I served in the army during the time frame of this book I understand just how broken the army was. The characters in the book are believable and easy to identify with. In a fictionalized account of a trye story the author can bend the truth however they choose, but I felt Mr Zlotnik mostly played it straight.
I have read all of Mr. Zlotnik's books. I find them interesting entertaining and at time thought provoking. You will enjoy the read.
A good book by a former soldier
Having served in the US Army in Bamburg Germany from 1971-1974 and Idar Oberstein, Germany from 1977-1980, I was aware of drug use and also racial problems. I am also aware that not everyone was a "head" or "racist". The storyline was rough, but was definatly correct with towns and the area around Baumholder.Although the book was mixed with fact and fiction, it would have been nice to have an epiloge as too what happened to everyone. Another Great book.
Well not quite sure what to say. In the beginning of the book one is lead to believe that this is near to a factual account. I was in Baumholder in late 74,75 and early 76. In fact the author was my Company Commander for a portion of that time. I will agree that racial tensions did exist and surely some drug use. However I feel this tale goes way too far toward fantasy and plays on some well worn racial stereotypes. It does a dis-service to those troops who were squared away, well trained and combat ready. I will also say that the then Capt.Zlotnik ran a pretty tight ship in my company HHC 1/83rd F.A.
This novel is based on the author's personal experience as a unit commander in Germany during a time of terrible racial and drug problems in the US Army. It also describes how middle level officers ignored or tried to hide the problems. It is a fast paced read with some horrendous crimes, including the torture, rape, and murder of a young Dutch woman; and the enslavement of some soldiers by drug addiction.
